FAQs for Level 4 NVQs
Construction NVQs are essential for professionals seeking to validate their skills and advance in the construction industry. Here, we address some of the most frequently asked questions to help you better understand the process and benefits of obtaining an NVQ.
Can I get a CSCS Card through this NVQ?
Yes! Once you successfully complete this NVQ, you’ll be eligible to apply for a Gold CSCS Card.
How Do I Get My CSCS Card After Completing the NVQ?
After successfully completing your NVQ, you’ll need to apply for your CSCS card directly with CSCS and provide your NVQ certificate details.
It is important to note – you must also pass the relevant CITB Health, Safety & Environment test
How long is my NVQ Certificate valid for?
Your NVQ certificate does not expire– it is a lifetime qualification. Once you achieve it, the good news is, you won’t need to renew or retake it!
Do I need to take any exams?
No. NVQs are assessed through real workplace experience, on-site observations, and professional discussions, so there are no exams or classrooms involved. You’ll earn your qualification by proving your skills in a practical, hands-on way.
What happens if I don’t pass an assessment?
If any part of your assessment doesn’t meet the required standard, you’ll be given feedback and the chance to provide additional evidence or improve your submission.
Is there Recognition of Prior Learning?
Yes! If you have relevant experience, skills, or previous qualifications, Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) allows you to use evidence from your past work, training, or assessments as part of your NVQ. This ensures your existing experience is acknowledged, making the qualification process more personalised and reflective of your real-world experience.
Do I Need an NVQ for a CSCS Card?
It depends on the type of CSCS card you’re applying for. While some lower-level cards don’t require an NVQ, most skilled, supervisory, and managerial roles now do. For example, a Gold Supervisor Card or Black Manager Card typically requires a relevant NVQ.
However, some experienced workers may have previously obtained a CSCS card under Grandfather Rights, which allowed them to qualify based on experience alone. CSCS has since phased out Grandfather Rights, meaning that if you want to renew your card or apply for a new one, you’ll likely need to complete the appropriate NVQ.
